Petřín cable car named Prague’s biggest tourist attraction

According to the state agency CzechTourism, the three most visited tourist sites in Prague were the Petřín Cable Car, Prague Zoo and Prague Castle.
This ranking remains unchanged from last year. DinoPark in the Galerie Harfa shopping center and the Kingdom of Railways exhibition in Smíchov were also among the ten most visited tourist destinations compared to the previous year.
Last year, just like in 2020, about one million people took the cable car to Petřín, and the cable car was not only the most visited tourist destination in the capital, but also in the whole Czech Republic.
Prague Zoo, which welcomed 963,000 visitors last year, saw attendance rise 13% year-on-year. On the contrary, Prague Castle saw its number of visitors decrease by 13%, to 444.
The director of the CzechTourism agency, Jan Herget, attributed the drop in attendance at Prague Castle to the low number of foreign travelers due to the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the Czech Statistical Office, around 2.6 million people stayed in hotels, boarding houses and national camps last year, and around 10.9 million before the outbreak of the pandemic.
This year, Herget expects around five million foreign guests to arrive in the Czech Republic, which he says will increase interest in Prague Castle.
According to statistics, 1.4 million foreign customers used the services of collective accommodation establishments in the capital last year, in 2019 there were 6.8 million.
Prague remains one of the most visited cities in Europe, with tourism forming a significant part of the economy.
However, the increased presence of services like AirBnB has also contributed to the increase in rents, sparking discussions on how best to meet the needs of tourists and locals.
